A meeting point for you and me

Funny song with conditionals , suggested by Ricardo 2ºI-NI

“I have found this great song from 1950 by Eileen Barton. The record first reached the Billboard magazine charts and lasted 15 weeks on the chart, peaking at number 1. It doesn’t give an important message but I think it’s so funny :)”  Ricardo wrote.

Eileen Barton – If I Knew You Were Comin’ I’d’ve Baked a Cake

[Spoken:]
Come in
Well, well, well, look who’s here
I haven’t seen you in many a year

If I knew you were comin’ I’d’ve baked a cake
baked a cake, baked a cake
If I knew you were comin’ I’d’ve baked a cake
Howd-ya do, howd-ya do, howd-ya do
Had you dropped me a letter, I’d a-hired a band
Grandest band in the land
Had you dropped me a letter, I’d a-hired a band
And spread the welcome mat for you

Oh, I don’t know where you came from
’cause I don’t know where you’ve been
But it really doesn’t matter
Grab a chair and fill your platter
And dig, dig, dig right in

If I knew you were comin’ I’d’ve baked a cake
Hired a band, goodness sake
If I knew you were comin’ I’d’ve baked a cake
Howd-ya do, howd-ya do, howd-ya do

[Instrumental Interlude]

If I knew you were comin’ I’d’ve baked a cake
baked a cake, baked a cake
If I knew you were comin’ I’d’ve baked a cake
Howd-ya do, howd-ya do, howd-ya do

Had you dropped me a letter
I’d a-hired a band
Grandest band in the land
Had you dropped me a letter
I’d a-hired a band
Spread the welcome mat for you

Oh, I don’t know where you came from
‘Cause I don’t know where you’ve been
But it really doesn’t matter
Grab a chair and fill your platter
And dig, dig, dig right in

If I knew you were comin’ I’d’ve baked a cake
Hired a band, goodness sake
If I knew you were comin’ I’d’ve baked a cake
Howd-ya do, howd-ya do, howd-ya do

Howd-ya do, howd-ya do, howd-ya do
Howd-ya do-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh

This is an example of a mixed conditional sentence: a  mixture of a 2nd type (If I knew you were coming) and a 3rd type (I would have mad a cake). However, in my opinion If I had known your were coming… is better English.
